The 164th Aviation Group was activated in Vietnam in December 1967 and located in Can Tho. The 164th CAG had about 3700 personnel.  Main infantry groups supported were the US 9th Infantry, the ARVN units and the 5th Special Forces.  IV Corps was the delta area consisting of rice patties and swampy ground which was covered with water six months a year during rainy season.  The corps was heavily populated, consisting of many small towns and villages. During the 1968 Tet offensive, aviation companies of the 164th CAG played vital and deciding roles in the liberation of Soc Trang, Can Tho, Bac Lieu, Vinh Long, and in preventing the VC from occupying many other major cities in the Delta.  During the Cambodian Incursion in April and May 1970, the 164th CAG participated in numerous combat operations in Cambodia, accounting for over 900 killed by air. 

 

  Presidential Unit Citation—27 & 28 Aug 65 - For the group’s outstanding efforts and accomplishments in support of "Campaign Rock Crusher" I and II, and "Cuu Long" I and II.  Also receiving this award were the 5th, 53rd and 62nd Quartermaster Detachments.        

 

  Valorous Unit Award—4–6 Apr 65.  Also receiving this award were the 5th, 53rd and 62nd Quartermaster Detachments.

Text Box:  The 78 Field Artillery Detachment was one of many small Target Acquisition Radar units stationed around the country.  This one was located within the LY-THUONG_KIET ARVN compound situated northeast of the Airfield and close to the city of Soc Trang in the Mekong Delta (IV Corps).  Artillery, 105s manned by ROK troops, were located at the airbase.  Staffing consisted of a Warrant Officer, Sergeant, and five Specialists (a radar technician and four operators).  The Set was an AN/MPQ4 Counter Mortar Radar trailer mounted on a raised platform to clear the surrounding structures.  It utilized an analog computer to determine the launch coordinates of ballistic munitions.  The deployment included generators and support vehicles.
