The 17th Aviation Group was activated in Vietnam in December 1965 and became operational March 1, 1966.  It assumed command of  the 10th, 14th and , 52nd battalions in March 1966 and became part of 1st Aviation Brigade in May 1966.  The group was located at Nha Trang until November 1970 when it moved to Tuy Hoa. II Corps terrain varied from coastal plains to mountains (Central Highlands).  The 17th CAG had about 8,000 personnel.  Late in the war, in 1972 the group provided intensive support to ARVN troops defending a major incursion by NVA tanks.  The 17th supported mostly the 4th Infantry, the 198th Light Infantry Brigade, 173rd Airborne and 5th Special Forces, along with the Korean (ROK) and and the 22nd and 23rd Division Vietnamese troops.

VIP missions flying Generals and full bird Colonels throughout II Corps to get a look at the action and powwow was a daily occurrence for someone's bird. It was the 201st who flew the Secretary of Defense on one trip to Vietnam and the Commanding General of MACV had his own, operated by the 201st. It also performed combat support to U.S. and Allied Forces. The 201st served in Vietnam from October 1967 to 1973.  It was reactivated in Korea in 1978 and served there until 1995. It is still in operation as B Company, 1st Battalion, 52nd Aviation Regiment.
